Total U.S. Video Streams Up 7 Percent

NEW YORK: Nielsen reports that the number of online video streams in the U.S. rose 7 percent to 14.5 billion in March, with the number of unique online viewers up 3.6 percent to 144.2 million.

Online viewers streamed 3 percent more video than they did in April, and spent 8 percent more time watching content online from home or work. The average viewer streamed 100.8 videos and spent an average of 4 minutes and 41 seconds watching online.

YouTube remains the number one destination with 111.9 million unique viewers, a 3.6 percent gain. VEVO has maintained its second-place position with 33.2 million, a 3-percent hike. Facebook was stable at 31.9 million. Hulu had 12.3 million viewers, a 3.7 percent gain. The biggest gainer was CNN Digital Network, where online viewers jumped by 60.1 percent to 9.6 million.

In terms of total streams, YouTube was again in first place with 8.2 billion, an 8.3 percent hike. Hulu is in a distant second with 810.6 million. Netflix had just 201.6 million but recorded a 28 percent gain, Netflix is also the most engaging video brand, with users averaging 9 hours and 53 minutes on the site. Hulu users average 5 hours and 13 minutes per month watching video on the site.
