Social Wit List: June 2014

NEW YORK: In June, ABC's Rising Star was the most-buzzed-about show in social media, with some 137,000 tweets, according to new data from The WIT.

The singing talent contest format Rising Star originally aired in Israel on Channel 2 and has been adapted in Brazil and Portugal, among other territories. The entire show airs live, beginning with the very first audition. Viewers at home vote in real time for the contestants via the show's second-screen application. The U.S. version on ABC, which launched June 22, drew approximately 137,000 tweets, with the common hashtags #MuchAnticipated, #GreatConcept, #PoorExecution and #NotEnoughTalent.

The second most social TV show for the month was Webheads, a series on Nickelodeon in the U.S. The studio-based game show is hosted by the popular Carlos PenaVega (of Nickelodeon series Big Time Rush fame) and features kid contestants as they compete in elimination challenges revolving around viral videos. On June 2, the series garnered around 89,000 tweets, with notable hashtags being #HostCarlosPenaVega, #FanPower and #MassiveNickFanbase.

Number three was the June 27 premiere of Girl Meets World on Disney Channel in the U.S. The series, a follow-up to the popular sitcom Boy Meets World that aired on ABC in the 1990s, garnered around 71,000 tweets. Popular hashtags included #CultSeries, #NostalgiaFromThirtySomethings, #MixedReviews and  #FunnyVTooDisney.

The June 30 broadcast of Just Keke on BET in the U.S. had 41,000 tweets about the series. The daytime talk show is hosted by 20-year-old singer/actress Keke Palmer and covers topics including fashion, pop culture, social issues and sex, and features celebrity interviews, "on the street" bits and a rap-battle segment. Hashtags surrounding Just Keke on Twitter included #VoiceofaGeneration, #Modern, #Original, #EngagedBETviewers and #WorstRapBattleInHistory.

Rounding out the top five was Zapped, drawing some 35,000 tweets around the June 27 broadcast. From Disney Channel in the U.S., the comedy/adventure TV movie, starring teen actress/singer/dancer Zendaya, follows 16-year-old Zoey Stevens, a skilled dancer and straight-A student who is having a hard time adjusting to a new high school. Among the popular hashtags used were #TeenIdolZendaya, #FanPower, #Music&Fun and #HitDisneymovies.

Mi corazón es tuyo, on Mexico's Canal de las Estrellas, had around 31,000 tweets for its June 30 airing. The telenovela, adapted from the Spanish scripted format Ana y los siete, features the unlikely romance between a stripper and a handsome businessman, who is a widower with seven children. Twitter hashtags included #Greatcast, #TeenIdolPaulinaGoto and #SadStory.

The BBC Three special Murdered By My Boyfriend, which aired June 23, also had significant social media buzz. The one-off drama, which follows the true story of a woman who falls for the wrong guy, had around 28,000 tweets, with hashtags that included #disturbing, #EyeOpening and #Young&EngagedAudience.

The comedic drama Chasing Life, which aired June 10 on ABC Family in U.S., had around 26,000 tweets. The show is adapted from the scripted format Terminales, which aired on Televisa channels in Mexico, chronicling a young woman's life after she's diagnosed with cancer. #empathy, #emotion and #powerful were among the most popular hashtags associated with the show.

The June 29 premiere of the new HBO series The Leftovers had 24,000 tweets surrounding its launch. The sci-fi series is adapted from Tom Perotta's 2011 book, which asks what would happen if the Biblical event of "The Rapture" actually took place and millions of people just disappeared from the Earth. Social media users were using hashtags such as #MixedFeelings, #disturbing, #confusing and #ShockingScenesOfAnimalViolence.

Making the list at number ten was David Beckham Into the Unknown, which aired June 9 on BBC One. The one-off doc, which sees the sports star on an expedition into the Brazilian rainforest with three friends, had around 23,000 tweets, including some with the hashtags #StarPower, #TheRealBecks and #SexAppeal.
