Social Wit List: July 2014

NEW YORK: In July, Syfy's Sharknado 2: The Second One generated the most buzz in social media, with some 515,000 tweets, according to new data from The WIT.

The New York-set sequel to the cult fave—which generated tremendous social media buzz for Syfy last year—aired on July 30 on Syfy in the U.S. It garnered about 515,000 tweets, with notable hashtags such as #SocialTVEvent, #GuiltyPleasure and #LOLtweets.

Coming in at number two for the month was The Alternative Press Music Awards, which was the first edition of the awards show, honoring the best in alternative rock. The July 21 broadcast on AXS in the U.S. drew around 288,000 tweets, with social media hashtags that included #FanPower, #RockLovers and #LivePerformances.

Finding Carter, which aired July 8 on MTV in the U.S., had social media hashtags such as #TwistedStory, #Engaging and #Catchphrases. The family drama is about a girl who discovers that her mom abducted her as a toddler and now must return to the family who thought they had lost her forever.

The July 6 airing of Miley Cyrus: Bangerz Tour, a special that features footage and behind-the-scenes action from Miley Cyrus' concerts, garnered around 77,000 tweets. Broadcast on NBC in the U.S., the special saw people tweeting social media hashtags such as #MileyUncensored, #FanCraze, #ConcertMemories and #OMGtweets.

Império, broadcast July 21 on TV Globo in Brazil, rounds out the top five. The Monday-to-Saturday telenovela, with a cast that includes former Idols contestant Chay Suede, begins with a flashback as it tells the story of a man who made his fortune in gem trafficking. The broadcast had around 77,000 tweets, with associated hashtags #Thrilling, #GreatCast, #TeenIdol and #TimeTransitionSucks.

The French entertainment special Stars sous hypnose, broadcast July 11 on TF1, drew some 65,000 tweets. Hashtags such as #Intriguing, #TruthOrFake? and #Skepticism were used during the broadcast, which saw Canadian artist Messmer hypnotize celebrities.

On July 16, Telecinco in Spain aired Así es Kiko Rivera, a documentary on the life and DJ work of Spanish celebrity Kiko Rivera, son of famous singer Isabel Pantoja and a regular on reality TV shows. The broadcast had around 65,000 tweets, including those with the hashtags #Sarcasm, #CelebrityBashing and #HardcoreFans.

NBC in the U.S. began airing the new series Running Wild with Bear Grylls on July 28. The series sees the famed adventurer and survivalist take celebrities into the most remote and wild locations in the U.S. and around the world for a 48-hour journey of a lifetime. Each episode features a different celebrity; Zac Efron was in the first episode. The debut garnered around 47,000 tweets, with hashtags such as #Impressive, #ZacEfronFans and #LiveTweetingZac.

At number nine for the month is the mtvU Fandom Awards, broadcast on July 27 on MTV in the U.S. The first-ever edition of the awards had around 41,000 tweets associated with it, including some with the hashtags #FanPower, #Engaging and #Exciting.

O Rebu, which aired July 14 on TV Globo in Brazil, drew around 36,000 tweets. Popular hashtags included #GreatStoryline, #Addictive and #StellarCast. O Rebu is a new version of the mystery telenovela that aired on the channel in 1974. In the show, airing weeknights, a person is murdered during a party.
