SBS Picks Up Black Nation

SYDNEY/STOCKHOLM/TORONTO: The feature documentary Black Nation has been acquired by Australian pubcaster SBS, which also scooped up the DVD rights for both Australia and New Zealand.

From Herrlander Pictures and Open Door, Black Nation looks at the state of African-American manhood in America as soon through the streets of Detroit, past and present. The film provides a picture of what it really means to be a black man living in the U.S. today, offering a hopeful vision of the future in the form of The Shrine of the Black Madonna, a church with a solution.

Black Nation was produced with the assistance of The Swedish Film Institute, Swedish Public broadcaster SVT and private 11investors.

"We are extremely proud and honoured that SBS has acquired our film," said producer Claes Herrlander. "We feel strongly that it will resonate with the Australian audience and around the world."

Executive producer Tom Powers added: "Black Nation is a timely film which sets out the challenges and opportunities facing African American men in Obama’s America—clearly underlining the fact that it may not be enough to say, ‘Yes we can.’"
