Percy Jackson TV Series Leads December Wit List

Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians earned the most followers on Instagram out of all the new series that debuted in December, according to The WIT.

The live-action fantasy series racked up 764,000 Instagram followers after its late December premiere date. It is based on the books by Rick Riordan, which were previously turned into two feature films in 2010 and 2013. The TV adaptation tells the story of a 12-year-old modern demigod who leads a quest across America to prevent a war among the Olympian gods. Walker Scobell, who plays the title character, boasts 1.1 million Instagram followers of his own, while Riordan has over a million himself.

The Turkish drama Sandık Kokusu (I Am Mother) took second place on the December Wit List, garnering 51,000 followers after its December 6 launch. Starring lead actresses Özge Özpirinçci and Demet Akbağ, the Show TV series tells the story of a 30-year-old woman in an unhappy marriage who sends her 3-year-old son to Istanbul to stay with her mother. When the young boy disappears, she fights relentlessly to be reunited with him. The show’s following was boosted by Özpirinçci and Akbağ’s followings, which are 3.6 million and 983,000, respectively.

Bami Doeeotseumnida (Night Has Come), a thriller that premiered on U+ Mobile TV and Netflix in South Korea on December 4, scored 47,000 to land in third place. The show follows high school students who go on a field trip but are forced to play a deadly version of the mafia game. K-pop singer Kim Woo-Seek, aka Wooshin, who has 1.5 million followers himself, stars.

Another Show TV drama made the list, with Ne Gemiler Yaktım (Burn Your Ships) earning fourth place. The Turkish drama centers on a young widow struggling to survive in difficult conditions with her daughter. She crosses paths with a married woman who escaped from her psychopathic husband with her daughter. Ne Gemiler Yaktım garnered 39,000 Instagram followers, aided by the star power of Devrim Özkan (1 million followers) and Deniz Baysal (6.1 million).

In fifth place, FOX Turkey’s Kızıl Goncalar (Red Roses) amounted an Instagram following of 32,500 after its December 18 debut. With a cast that includes Mert Yazıcıoğlu (1.7 million followers) and Özcan Deniz (3 million), it tells the story of a mother and daughter who escape from a forced marriage in a restrictive sect. The mother works for a progressive psychiatrist whose daughter’s identity causes turmoil despite their growing bond.

Altın Kafes (Golden Cage), another Turkish series, this time from ATV, landed in sixth place with 21,300 followers. The romantic drama, based on the South Korean scripted format The Last Empress, follows the love story of Zeynep, a teacher who rescues Onur, the heir of a large corporation, from an assassination attempt during a family foundation event. Aytaç Şaşmaz, who has 4 million followers, plays the lead role.

Welcome to Samdal-ri debuted on TVING, JTBC and Netflix in South Korea on December 2 and amassed 20,000 Instagram followers, boosted by star Ji Chang-woo, who boasts a whopping 26 million followers. The romantic series follows a weather forecaster with a bad reputation who never left his hometown and his childhood friend, a famous photographer who suddenly lost her career in Seoul.

The Joyn PLUS+ and ProSieben series Forsthaus Rampensau Germany, a local adaptation of the Austrian reality series, landed in eighth place after garnering 9,200 followers. It sees nine celebrity duos move into a small, isolated house in the picturesque Carinthian mountains to compete in challenges and try to avoid elimination as they vie for a cash prize. The celebrity pairs, consisting of reality TV stars, comedians, influencers and models, have a combined total of 1.5 million followers.

In ninth place is Vestidas de azul, the sequel to the biographical series Veneno, with 8,200 followers. The Atresplayer Premium series picks up after the death of Cristina Rodríguez and follows journalist Valeria Vegas, who returns to Valencia and finds a videotape of a documentary recounting the experiences of six transgenders in Spain in the early 1980s. Their experiences serve as inspiration for the writer’s new book. Vestidas de azul’s following was aided by Veneno’s (110,000) and lead actress Lola Rodríguez’s (328,000).

Rounding out the December Wit List with 8,200 followers is The OGs, a YouTube talk show produced by online sports outlet Playmaker HQ. Hosted by former NBA champions Udonis Haslem (730,000 followers) and Mike Miller (297,000), the series sees the two have conversations about sports, popular culture and life on and off the court, alongside special guests. Playmaker HQ Studio has 3.3 million followers of its own.
