Combined Disney+/Hulu Service to Own Most Popular Titles in the U.S.

The combined Disney+ and Hulu SVOD service will rise above Netflix to own more top titles than any other streamer in the U.S., according to Ampere Analysis, based on data from September 2023.

In Q3 2023, Disney+ held 17 of the top 100 performing SVOD titles in the U.S., led by its movie library. When combined with Hulu, that figure rises to 33, giving the upcoming joint service the largest overall share of top titles. In comparison, Netflix holds 29 of the top SVOD titles in the U.S., and Max has 18. These are then followed by Paramount+ Premium, Peacock, Paramount+ and Prime Video.

Disney+’s content strategy relies on its strong children’s and family portfolio and sci-fi and fantasy releases for major franchises, which will represent 81 percent of the top 100 most popular titles on the combined platform. Hulu’s library will complement this, as it features popular titles from genres currently underserved on Disney+, particularly crime, thriller, romance and horror.

The combined Disney+/Hulu service’s catalog will feature over 9,000 distinct movies and TV seasons, positioning it above Netflix in terms of catalog volume, as well. Disney+/Hulu will hold 9,578 titles to Netflix’s 8,391, as of Q3 2023. It would come second only to Prime Video, which has an offering of 10,872 titles.

“With a combined app offering Disney+ and Hulu due to launch in the U.S. in early 2024, its compelling new streaming content offer will surely shake up the status quo,” said Joshua Rustage, analyst at Ampere Analysis. “The combined Disney+ and Hulu catalog will provide one of the most well-rounded and popular offerings in a singular platform, upping the content stakes at a time when many are pulling back on content investment. Rivals will have to ensure their offerings remain competitive as the battle for viewing time intensifies, especially as the need to pull in advertising dollars is now also central to the streaming mix.”
