UKTV History Commissions WWII Doc Series

LONDON, June 26: UKTV
History has commissioned a six-part documentary series, Their Finest Hour, from Testimony Films, co-produced with ITV West.

Their Finest Hour will focus on the ordinary people who, despite the
hardships of war, kept Britain’s chief industries in production—making
aircrafts, building ships, digging coal, caring for the injured. The series
features first-hand testimonies from some of these unsung heroes.

Episodes to be featured
are “The War at Sea,” examining the work of the merchant seamen; “Wartime
Emergency,” with tales surrounding blitz attacks; “The Air War,” featuring
dangerous jobs done by civilians; “Countryside at War,” centered on the work of
the Women’s Land Army; “The Railway Boys,” looking at the teenagers who kept
the nation’s railways running; and “The Underground Army,” which focuses on the
50,000 who left school to work in the hazardous mines.

UKTV’s Adrian Wills
commented, “Uplifting untold stories of heroism and tragedy are what make this
series tick. Many of the stories are very moving and what becomes clear is that
life on the home front was often as dangerous for those who stayed as those who
fought abroad.”

Steve Humphries, the
managing director of Testimony Films, added, “This is a hugely emotional and
important story that has never been properly told before. It’s been a privilege
to document the extraordinary stories of the home front veterans before they
are lost to history.”
