Universal Cable Productions Adapting Dear Zachary Doc for TV

UNIVERSAL CITY: Universal Cable Productions (UCP) has acquired the rights for the critically acclaimed inspirational documentary Dear Zachary from Kurt Kuenne, with the aim to develop it into a miniseries.

Dear Zachary served as Kuenne's tribute to a fallen friend, Andrew Bagby. Kuenne interviewed numerous relatives, friends and associates of Bagby, weaving their memories into a film as a scrapbook for Bagby’s infant son, Zachary. Bagby was found dead in 2001 at the age of 28, after he had been shot by his ex-girlfriend, who then fled to Canada, where she was able to walk free on bail, pregnant with Bagby's child. The doc highlights failures within Canada’s legal system and was instrumental in amending Canada’s criminal code in December 2010.

Kuenne will serve as a co-executive producer and consultant on the series. Josh Braun will also serve as co-executive producer. Sean Perrone and Aaron Kaplan will executive produce.

"For six years, I've turned down overtures to dramatize this story because I didn't think such a production needed to exist, but the number of people who've written me to say this story changed their life made me realize that bringing it to a wider audience might do a lot of good, as long as the story was told with humanity, dignity and honesty,” said Kuenne. “I look forward to working with Universal Cable Productions along with Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone to produce an artful dramatization of the highest quality.”
