TLC Goes Semi-Scripted

SILVER SPRING: TLC is set to premiere Surviving the In-Laws, a scripted series based on real-life stories, later this month.

The series, which the network says is "loosely scripted," features the stories of newlyweds with overbearing in-laws. The stories are true but the identities have been changed to protect the guilty. Real people were interviewed and their anecdotes about their relationship with their in-laws are being brought to life by actors in the show.

Two half-hour episodes are due to debut on July 31 back to back.

"We all have laugh-out-loud stories from our well-meaning, but over-involved in-laws, but for the sake of our relationships, we never really have the chance to tell them to back off. Surviving the In-Laws is the perfect way to bring these relatable, and ridiculous, experiences to life, without getting the couple in trouble with their parents," said Amy Winter, the general manager of TLC. "Pushing into the scripted space but still based on real stories, Surviving the In-Laws keeps the heart and humor TLC’s audience expects from our programming."
