NEW YORK: After hosting a social media contest to decide the title of the highly anticipated Sharknado sequel, Syfy has revealed that the follow-up TV movie will be called Sharknado 2: The Second One.

More than 5,000 titles were submitted for consideration via Twitter. Sharknado 2: The Second One will be set in New York City. The Asylum will again serve as producer. The sequel is expected to hit Syfy in July 2014.

Sharknado premiered on July 11 on Syfy to 1.4 million viewers. However, it was the social media frenzy surrounding the TV movie that drove the telefilm to its success. The film set a ratings record on its third showing, bringing in 2.1 million total viewers.

Thomas Vitale, the executive VP of programming and original movies at Syfy, said: “Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2. This response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum.”
