Super Bowl XLIX Proves Most Social Ever

NEW YORK: Last night's Super Bowl XLIX was the most tweeted Super Bowl ever, with more than 28.4 million global tweets containing terms related to the game and halftime show sent during the live telecast.

Among the moments that generated the biggest peaks of Twitter conversation, measured in tweets per minute, during the live telecast were Malcolm Butler's interception of a pass by Russell Wilson 1 yard from the goal line with 20 seconds left in the game, generating 395,000 tweets per minute. The Patriots' final defeat over the Seahawks delivered 379,000 tweets per minute. The end of Katy Perry's halftime performance drew 284,000 tweets per minute. In total, the halftime show had Twitter buzzing with more than 3 million tweets.

In preliminary viewing figures, the game delivered the highest overnight rating in Super Bowl history on NBC with 49.7/72. NBC's Super Bowl XLIX overnight peaked at a 52.9/73. This overnight rating is up 4 percent from last year and up 3 percent from the prior record (set for Super Bowl XLVII in 2013).
