Golden Globe Nominees Revealed

LOS ANGELES: There were several surprises among the nominees for the 2014 Golden Globes, with past winners Homeland and Mad Men noticeably absent from the roster, and newcomers like Netflix scoring several nods.

Netflix's House of Cards is nominated for best TV series drama, alongside Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, The Good Wife and freshman series Masters of Sex. The nominations for best actor in a TV drama went to Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad, Liev Schreiber for Ray Donovan, Michael Sheen for Masters of Sex, Kevin Spacey for House of Cards and James Spader for The Blacklist. In the category for best actress in a drama, there are two Netflix shows nominated: Orange Is the New Black (Taylor Shilling) and House of Cards (Robin Wright). The other female nominees are Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife, Tatiana Maslany for Orphan Black and Kerry Washington for Scandal.

First-timer Brooklyn Nine-Nine is nominated for best TV series comedy or musical, facing off with The Big Bang Theory, Girls, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation. The actors nominated for comedy include Michael J. Fox, for his return to television in The Michael J. Fox Show. Fox is up against Jason Bateman of Arrested Development, Don Cheadle of House of Lies, Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory and Andy Samberg of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The female comedic nominees are Zooey Deschanel for New Girl, Lena Dunham for Girls, Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep and Amy Poehler for Parks and Recreation.

Starz landed two nominations in the category for best mini-series or TV movie, for Dancing on the Edge and White Queen. Also nominated are American Horror Story: Coven, Behind the Candelabra and Top of the Lake. Actor nods in the category went to Matt Damon and Michael Douglas for Behind the Candelabra, Chiwetel Ejiofor for Dancing on the Edge, Idris Elba for Luther and Al Pacino for Phil Spector. The best actress nominees in the category are Helena Bonham Carter for Burton and Taylor, Rebecca Ferguson for White Queen, Jessica Lange for American Horror Story: Coven, Helen Mirren for Phil Spector and Elisabeth Moss for Top of the Lake.

In the motion picture arena, the nominees for best drama are 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Philomena and Rush. Up for best comedy or musical are American Hustle, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street.
