Game of Thrones to End with Season Eight

LOS ANGELES: HBO has confirmed that season eight of Game of Thrones will be its last.

HBO’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, announced the network’s plans for Game of Thrones at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday. He said that the decision to wrap the network’s highest rated series after season eight was ultimately up to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.

HBO also unveiled an October 2 premiere date for its new one-hour drama Westworld. The series was created for television by Jonathan Nolan (Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Person of Interest) and Lisa Joy (Pushing Daisies, Burn Notice). It was inspired by the 1973 motion picture Westworld, written and directed by Michael Crichton.

The network is planning to debut its new comedy Insecure on October 9. Created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, the series will follow a pair of African-American female best friends who are dealing with their own flaws while they navigate different worlds and cope with uncomfortable everyday experiences.

The Sarah Jessica Parker comedy Divorce also debuts October 9 on HBO. The series is created by Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), with Paul Simms (HBO’s Girls) serving as a showrunner.

HBO renewed Real Time with Bill Maher through 2018, with season 15 to come in 2017 and season 16 to follow in 2018. The show is currently averaging 4.4 million viewers, marking the most-watched season since the show’s debut run in 2003.
