LOS ANGELES: Seasoned TV exec Chris Rantamaki has been hired as Discovery Channel's senior VP of production and development, effective April 20.

In his new role, Rantamaki will work out of Los Angeles under Denise Contis, Discovery's executive VP of production and development. He is charged with executing production strategies and expanding and diversifying the network's slate and acquisitions.

Rantamaki previously served as senior VP of original series for Viacom's Spike TV, where he helped develop Ink Masters and oversaw a number of other shows, including Bar Rescue, Catch a Contractor and Tattoo Nightmares. Earlier in his career, Rantamaki was VP of production for Discovery Chanel, where he managed such series as Pitchmen and The Colony. His production credits include TLC's Miami Ink and FOX's Ambush Makeover.

"Chris is incredibly smart and knows the TV industry," said Contis. "His experience in growing and broadening an audience, along with his knowledge of Discovery, make him the perfect choice to lead this talented team."
