LOS ANGELES: HBO has renewed its hit drama series Boardwalk Empire for a third season.

Boardwalk Empire, set in the 1920s in the early days of Prohibition, chronicles the life of the leader of Atlantic City. The award-winning series comes from Terence Winter, the writer of The Sopranos, and director Martin Scorsese. At the recent Primetime Emmy Awards, Boardwalk Empire led all programming with eight awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Martin Scorsese).

"Following a triumphant first season, I was eager to see what Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their stellar team had in store, and they continue to surpass our highest expectations," said Michael Lombardo, the president of HBO Programming. "The response from the media and our viewers has been extremely gratifying."
