Big Little Lies, The Handmaid’s Tale Win Big on Emmys Night

The Handmaid’s Tale notched up a total of eight wins at the 69th Emmy Awards, including outstanding drama series.

Saturday Night Live had nine Emmy wins in total, with The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies scoring eight each. By network, HBO led the night with 29 total wins, followed by Netflix with 20, NBC with 15 and Hulu with 10.

The Handmaid’s Tale won for outstanding drama series, while Veep won for outstanding comedy. In the performance categories, Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) was honored for lead actor in a drama and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) as lead actress. Supporting nods in drama went to John Lithgow (The Crown) and Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale). For comedy, Donald Glover (Atlanta) scored the Emmy for lead actor and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) won for lead actress. The supporting performance awards for comedy went to Alec Baldwin (Saturday Night Live) and Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live).

Big Little Lies was recognized as outstanding limited series. Riz Ahmed (The Night Of) took home the lead actor Emmy in the limited-series category and Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) for lead actress. The supporting wins went to Laura Dern (Big Little Lies) and Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies).

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won for outstanding variety talk series, and The Voice won for outstanding reality-competition program.

Outstanding directing for a comedy series was presented to Donald Glover (Atlanta). Outstanding writing for a drama series went to Bruce Miller (The Handmaid’s Tale). Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe (Master of None) won the Emmy for outstanding writing for a comedy series. Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) took the Emmy for outstanding directing for a drama series.
