NEW YORK: Despite a string of lawsuits and controversy, the cloud-based DVR service Aereo continues to enter new markets, the latest being a launch planned for Detroit on October 28.

Consumers in nine counties in the metro Detroit area will be able to access the free over-the-air TV channels with a cloud-based DVR via supported devices. Aereo has come under fire because it offers live-streaming online versions of FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC and other networks, having found a loophole in U.S. copyright law.

The service launched first in New York and has since spread to such markets as Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Miami and Salt Lake City, among others.
