AMC, SundanceTV Reveal Upcoming Highlights

AMC has slated premieres for a range of upcoming highlights, along with announcing the season nine renewal of The Walking Dead, while SundanceTV is bringing back Liar.

The Walking Dead has been renewed for a ninth season, to premiere in late 2018. Current showrunner Scott M. Gimple is being elevated to chief content officer, overseeing the entire Dead TV universe, including The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead and potential brand extensions on a variety of platforms. Angela Kang, who has been a writer on the show since 2011 and co-executive producer since 2013, is being promoted by Gimple to executive producer and showrunner of The Walking Dead, starting with season nine.

Season four of Fear the Walking Dead will debut April 15 at 10 p.m., with subsequent episodes to air at 9 p.m. beginning April 22. AMC’s new international thriller McMafia, an eight-part series, arrives February 26 at 10 p.m. The Terror, from executive producers Ridley Scott, David Kajganich and Soo Hugh, premieres March 26 at 9 p.m. Season three of Into the Badlands will launch April 22 at 10 p.m. On April 30 at 10 p.m., AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction hits the network. The year-round documentary series sees groundbreaking artists curate and author the untold stories and histories of their respective genres.

SundanceTV, meanwhile, picked up the psychological thriller Liar for a second season. Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) and Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) will both return for season two, which will once again be written and executive produced by series creators Jack Williams and Harry Williams of Two Brothers Pictures (The Missing, Fleabag).

Sundance Now, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service, unveiled highlights from its 2018 programming slate. In addition to its collection of curated feature films and documentaries, the streaming service will roll out a diverse offering of comedies, dramas and true-crime stories this winter. Cold Blooded: The Clutter Family Murders premieres January 18, followed by Baroness Von Sketch Show on January 25. The System with Joe Berlinger debuts February 8 and This Close on February 14. In March, Sundance Now adds Kim Kong, a three-episode comedic miniseries that follows bored French film director Mathieu Stannis, who while filming his latest mindless action movie, is abducted by an Asian dictatorship. Also coming in March is Liberation Day, a documentary about the Slovenian cult band Laibach, which became the first rock group ever to perform in the state of North Korea.
