Survey: Streaming More Popular Than DVR, VOD Playback

CULVER CITY: The streaming of films and TV shows to connected devices has become the preferred method of viewing for the majority of consumers in the U.S., according to a new study conducted by Crackle in association with Frank N. Magid Associates.

The second annual New Living Room report finds that viewers are streaming video to connected TVs at a record pace during prime time, with more than half of the adults surveyed saying that they prefer streaming to a connected TV over other devices in the home. According to the survey, 83 percent of respondents stream TV shows or movies at home, compared with the 74 percent reported last year. With that same demo, 62 percent prefer to stream to the TV. During prime time, streaming is even more popular than DVR, with 67 percent saying they prefer live TV during prime time, 45 percent citing streaming and 31 percent for DVR.

“Last year, we saw that streaming video on connected TV devices was outpacing all other non-linear viewing habits—this year’s study surpassed our expectations. Viewer consumption on CTV devices is soaring in popularity not only for individuals, but also overwhelmingly for co-viewing among groups in the living room," said Eric Berger, Sony Pictures Television's executive VP of digital networks and general manager of Crackle. “The data also clearly supports a strategy of addressing consumer demand with movies, TV series and original programming that are offered free with advertising on all game consoles, streaming boxes and Smart TVs.”
