Curiosity has commissioned the U.K. indie Impossible Factual for three new documentary series, including Scary Tales of New York.

The true-crime docuseries takes a fresh look at the real-life New York crimes in the age of film noir. The six-parter features cutting-edge archive restoration that brings the world of mid-20th-century New York to life.

Narrated by Alexander Armstrong, History: The Interesting Bits incorporates animation, archival material and expert opinions. The eight-part series will delve into curious events in history and take on the questions that have long gone unanswered.

Another eight-part series, Science for Evil Geniuses explores the kind of scientific questions and theories one might expect from more unsavory characters with questionable ambitions. It experiments with science and new technologies to ascertain what the chances are of bringing the twisted dreams of an “evil genius” to life.

All three titles have been commissioned by Curiosity for its flagship streaming service Curiosity Stream and the linear Curiosity Channel.

Adam Luria, head of documentary at Impossible Factual, said: “It’s a really exciting time to be joining the core team at Impossible Factual as it grows the range and reach of a first-class slate of programs that combine factual integrity with innovative and entertaining storytelling.”

Steve Maher, creative director at Impossible Factual, added: “Through a combination of compelling stories, innovative techniques and top-class talent that includes Alexander Armstrong narrating History: The Interesting Bits, we’re sure there will be something for all Curiosity viewers to love. Science for Evil Geniuses brings an element of mischief and fun to the genre, whilst Scary Tales of New York will immerse viewers in the dark and macabre world of old-time New York City. This slate represents a good range of our expertise, and we’re looking forward to bringing these shows to Curiosity Stream and Curiosity Channel for their audiences to discover and enjoy.”

Jorge Franzini, Curiosity’s VP of original content, development and programming, commented: “Building off our strong relationship with Impossible Factual and the wild success of our series The Secrets to Civilization, Curiosity is thrilled to bring these next projects to our viewers, who love the innovative storytelling and ambitious visuals that Impossible Factual always delivers. They are sure to become brand-defining titles for us.”
