Disney Channel has greenlit a reboot of Wizards of Waverly Place, tentatively titled Wizards, with Selena Gomez and David Henrie set to reprise their roles.

The new series will follow an adult Justin Russo, who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family. When his sister Alex brings a young, powerful wizard to his home, he realizes he must dust off his magical skills in order to mentor her and safeguard the future of the Wizard World.

Gomez will guest star in the premiere episode, while Henrie will appear in a leading series-regular role. Other series regulars will include Max Matenko (Platonic), Janice LeAnn Brown (Just Roll with It), Alkaio Thiele (Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends) and Mimi Gianopulos (Rutherford Falls).

Disney Branded Television is set to begin production next month in Los Angeles. Gomez and Henrie serve as executive producers, alongside writers Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (Raven’s Home). Gary Marsh (Descendants: The Rise of Red) is also an executive producer. Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain) directed and executive produced the pilot and is set to direct multiple other episodes as well.

Wizards (w.t.) is slated to premiere later this year on Disney Channel and Disney+.

Wizards of Waverly Place captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “We can’t wait to step back into the magical world of Wizards, inviting both longtime fans and a new generation to experience the enchantment alongside Selena, David and our incredible cast and crew.”
