TORONTO: DHX Television has ordered a second season of the original tween drama series Backstage, produced by Fresh TV, for broadcast on Family Channel next year.

Backstage follows a group of talented teens attending a prestigious performing arts school. The show, which premiered on Family Channel in March, stars Josh Bogert, Aviva Mongillo and Mckenzie Small, among others. Production on the 30-episode sophomore season is slated to begin this summer in Toronto.

“It’s no secret that our core audience is fascinated by the performing arts, and we’re thrilled to be able to spark their imaginations with this realistic and heartfelt peek into everyday teenage life,” said Michael Goldsmith, the VP of original production at DHX Television. “Our cast of actors, singers and dancers represents Canadian talent at its finest, and we look forward to seeing even more of what they have to offer as the second season builds upon the international success of the first.”

Brian Irving, executive producer and producer for Fresh TV, added: “We’re thrilled to be back for season two of Backstage. Our amazing cast, writers and directors all truly represent the spirit of the performing arts and the triple-threat.”

This commission follows the news that Bogert, Mongillo and Small will make their touring debuts as performers at Family Channel’s Big Ticket Summer Concert this year, along with additional performers from the series.
