Netflix Nabs Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Live-Action Eloise

Netflix has come on board Amy Sherman-Palladino’s live-action Eloise film adaptation, with Ryan Reynolds set to star and executive produce through his label Maximum Effort.

“Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza,” said Hannah Minghella, head of feature animation and family film at Netflix. “It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm—Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds—in this bold, hilarious and heartfelt new family film.”

Sherman-Palladino has written the film with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. Reynolds, George Dewey, Ashley Fox, and Johnny Pariseau will produce for Maximum Effort, with Woolverton also producing. Molly Milstein executive produces for Maximum Effort.

Based on the beloved children’s book series written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight, the film will feature a brand-new adventure for the titular character. Newcomer Mae Schenk will star in the lead role.

MRC acquired the rights to Eloise in 2019 and is overseeing production of the movie. MRC will collaborate with the Thompson estate, illustrator Knight, as well as Simon & Schuster, the book series’ publisher, on the film.

Handmade Films will work in conjunction with MRC on the production of the picture, which will start in London in November.

“We’ve been working with the Thompson estate and Handmade Films for a long time to bring Eloise to fans everywhere, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Maximum Effort, Amy and Netflix to bring the cherished children’s property to audiences around the world,” said Jonathan Golfman and Brye Adler, co-presidents of MRC Film.
