Chernobyl, The Crown Lead BAFTA TV Nominations

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has revealed the nominees for its TV awards, with Chernobyl and The Crown leading the pack in nominations.

For the Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards and British Academy Television Craft Awards, there were 14 total nominations for Chernobyl, seven for The Crown, six for Fleabag and Giri/Haji, five for His Dark Materials and The Virtues and four nominations for Killing Eve, Sex Education and Top Boy.

The Crown is up against The End of the F***Ing World, Gentleman Jack and Giri/Haji in the drama series category. The miniseries arena features A Confession, Chernobyl, The Victim and The Virtues.

Lead actor nominees are Callum Turner for The Capture, Jared Harris for Chernobyl, Stephen Graham for The Virtues and Takehiro Hira for Giri/Haji. Lead actress contenders are Glenda Jackson for Elizabeth Is Missing, Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Samantha Morton for I Am Kirsty and Suranne Jones for Gentleman Jack.

For scripted comedy, the nominees are Catastrophe, Derry Girls, Fleabag and Stath Lets Flats. The female comedy nominees for performance are Gbemisola Ikumelo for Famalam, Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag, Sarah Kendall for Frayed and Sian Clifford for Fleabag. Male performance nominees for comedy are Guz Khan for Man Like Mobeen, Jamie Demetriou for Stath Lets Flats, Ncuti Gatwa for Sex Education and Youssef Kerkour for Home.

The nominated programs for single drama are Brexit: The Uncivil War, Elizabeth Is Missing, The Left Behind and Responsible Child. The nominated soaps or continuing dramas are Casualty, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Holby City.

For comedy entertainment programs, The Graham Norton Show is nominated alongside The Last Leg, The Ranganation and Taskmaster. For entertainment programs, it’s The Greatest Dancer up against The Rap Game UK, Strictly Come Dancing and The Voice UK. Performers in the entertainment category receiving nods are Frankie Boyle for Frankie Boyle’s New World Order, Graham Norton for The Graham Norton Show, Lee Mack for Would I Lie To You and Mo Gilligan for The Lateish Show With Mo Gilligan.

Celebrity Gogglebox is nominated for reality and constructed factual, along with Harry’s Heroes: The Full English, Race Across the World and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. In the way of pure factual, the nominated programs are Crime and Punishment, Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, Leaving Neverland and Our Dementia Choir with Vicky Mcclure. For specialist factual, the nominees are 8 Days: To the Moon and Back; Seven Worlds, One Planet; Thatcher: A Very British Revolution; and Yorkshire Ripper Files.

The international category features Euphoria, Succession, Unbelievable and When They See Us.

The Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards ceremony will be Friday, July 31, on BBC One with the British Academy Television Craft Awards taking place online on Friday, July 17.
