ProSiebenSat.1 is slated to combine augmented reality (AR) with linear broadcast TV for a week next month, marking a first in Germany.

The initiative will kick off with the hit science program Galileo on November 6 at 7:05 p.m. To access the augmented reality programming, viewers will need a smartphone and the Galileo AR application, which was developed by German start-up eyecandylab. The app will show viewers additional information and animations on their smartphone screens.

Daniel Rosemann, ProSieben’s general manager, stated: “With Galileo, we have always pioneered new technologies on TV. For its innovative approach, the show won the German Television Award 2017. With augmented reality, we are again embracing leadership and a new dimension of TV. This new technology will make Galileo reports even more engaging. You can also enjoy it if you are—like me—not a tech geek. In fact, it probably helps.”
