EndemolShine Scripted, a Banijay Benelux label, is producing a new Dutch drama for Viaplay chronicling the aftermath of the May 2000 explosion in a fireworks warehouse in Enschede.

The four-part Roombeek will explore the human toll of the explosion, which killed 23 people and injured almost 950, destroying some 200 homes in the Enschede suburb. Casting is currently underway, with production expected to begin early next year.

“We have very high ambitions for our Dutch originals and are committed to working with both established and upcoming local talents to tell unique stories that can attract a broad audience,” said Filippa Wallestam, the chief content officer at Viaplay Group. “Roombeek will be a sensitive and high-quality production that looks beyond the headlines to show us some of the human lives affected by a tragic event.”

The streaming platform arrived in the Netherlands earlier this year as part of its global expansion.
