Spectrum Originals has picked up the Latin American scripted series Side Games (Todo por el juego) from The Mediapro Studio’s Imagina International Sales.

Based on the novel El Fútbol No Es Así, written by La Liga President Javier Tebas and co-writer Pedro Torrens, the series is set in the world of a fictionalized second division Spanish soccer league. It follows an activist businessman who becomes team president, only to find himself embroiled in mob-controlled betting, political corruption, family turmoil and murder.

Produced by The Mediapro Studio, the Spanish-language series, offered with the option of English subtitles, debuted to strong ratings across Latin America last July. It will make its U.S. premiere on July 15, with the first three episodes becoming available, followed by episodes four and five on July 22 and episodes six through eight on July 29.

“With its strong embrace by Latin American audiences and the massive popularity of soccer as a backdrop, we believe this wonderfully written dramatic series will appeal to both the large and growing Spanish-speaking viewership in the U.S., as well as everyone who loves sophisticated drama,” said Katherine Pope, head of Spectrum Originals.
