Onyx Collective has expanded its slate of drama programming for Hulu with Sheba, currently in development with Proximity Media.

Co-created by writer and producer Chantelle Wells (Yellowjackets) and actress and writer Azie Tesfai (Supergirl), the series explores the rise to power of the first queen on the continent of Africa as she seeks to unite the nation now known as Ethiopia. Wells will write the series.

Proximity Media will executive produce via its overall deal with Onyx Collective, along with Wells, Tesfai and Proximity’s Ryan Coogler, Kalia King, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler.

Tesfai co-starred and wrote on The CW’s Supergirl and was the first Ethiopian person to portray a comic superhero on screen. Currently, she is also writing a pilot for The Chase, in development at NBC.

Wells most recently worked on Marvel’s upcoming limited series Echo for Disney+. She has also written for Showtime’s Yellowjackets, for which she was nominated for two Writers Guild Awards. Her first TV writing job was on The CW’s Jane the Virgin, followed by NBC’s Good Girls.
