BURBANK: ABC Family has added to the slate of originals that will premiere under its new Freeform rebranding in 2016 with a straight-to-series order for Dead of Summer, a horror series set at a summer camp in the late '80s.

The network has given a straight-to-series order based on a multiple-script commitment and penalty to the horror tale Dead of Summer from Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (Lost, Once Upon a Time), along with Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior). The show will be produced by ABC Signature Studios and Kitsis/Horowitz. Horowitz, Kitsis and Goldberg will write and executive produce.

Dead of Summer is billed as part coming-of-age story, part supernatural horror story.

ABC Family is becoming Freeform in January 2016.

Karey Burke, the executive VP of programming and development at ABC Family, commented: “Dead of Summer is about what happens when summer camp goes wrong—really, really wrong. The horror genre is new for us and I’m thrilled to have Adam, Eddy and Ian bring their immeasurable talent to our network and usher us into this new space.”
