BBC Studios has appointed Kate Oates, currently senior executive producer, as head of continuing drama.

Oates is overseeing the prime-time continuing dramas EastEnders, Holby City and Casualty. Her new role brings Doctors, River City and Pobol y Cwm under her creative leadership as well.

Prior to joining BBC Studios in 2018, Oates produced ITV’s Coronation Street. Between 2010 and 2016, she worked on ITV’s Emmerdale, rising from story editor to series producer.

Ralph Lee, director of content at BBC Studios, said: “Kate is an exceptional talent and I’m delighted she is taking on this important role for BBC Studios. Our continuing dramas are watched by millions; they bring the nation together and don’t shy away from tackling difficult social issues. Kate’s passion and creativity are already making a real difference, and she can now apply her exciting vision to the full portfolio of our continuing dramas.”

Oates said: “Continuing drama is a cornerstone of British television, and the biggest challenge is keeping audiences consistently engaged with brilliant stories that feel fresh and exciting. I love working with all the talent at EastEnders, Holby City and Casualty, and can’t wait to get working creatively with the teams at Pobol y Cwm, Doctors and River City.”
