iflix is set to release Rise to Power, a spin-off movie in the KL Gangster Underworld universe.

Scheduled to premiere for free exclusively on iflix on September 19, the movie will feature Dynas Mokhtar reprising her role as Madam Wong to tell the story of how the only woman to lead a KL gang rose to power. In a retelling that chronicles her struggles, May Wong defies family tradition while plotting her way to the top.

Rise to Power, which will answer questions raised in season one of KL Gangster Underworld and foreshadow what’s to come in season two, reunites filmmakers from Skop Productions with directors Faisal Ishak and Syafiq Yusof. In addition to Madam Wong, returning characters will include Zan (Hasnul Rahmat), Tauke (Azhan Rani), Shah (Beto Kusyairy), Adi (Zahiril Adzim), Belut (Amerul Affendi) and King (Ridzuan Hashim). Elvis Chin, Tony Eusoff and Sharifah Sakinah are among those new to the franchise.

Season two of KL Gangster Underworld is set to begin shooting in November ahead of a 2020 release.

Mark Francis, iflix’s global director of original programming, said, “When we looked at the feedback from fans who made KL Gangster Underworld season one one of our most successful series, we realized they were particularly intrigued by the character of Madam Wong and the nature of her relationship with Ayah Zan. We were in the planning stages for season two when Dynas became pregnant, and it occurred to us that we could preempt the second season with a story set ten years before the events of season one, thereby ‘resurrecting’ Zan.”

Francis added: “This movie is really unique for its strong and ruthless female lead while serving up the level of fight action and plot intrigue that is making the KL Gangster Underworld franchise a true fan favorite.”
