Kisah Tanah Jawa: Merapi, iflix’s first original horror series out of Indonesia, has made its debut on the platform.

The series follows Andi (Deva Mahenra) and Babon (Joshua Suherman) as they search for their missing friend, who disappeared on the treacherous Mt. Merapi, with an assembled team of hikers unaware of their true intentions. All users can stream and download the entire six-part series for free on the iflix app or iflix.com. Kisah Tanah Jawa: Merapi will also be available on SHAREit, with weekly episode drops every Thursday.

Produced by iflix and Rapi Films, Kisah Tanah Jawa: Merapi brings together veteran director Faozan Rizal (Habibie & Ainun) and writer Salman Aristo (Laskar Pelangi) for the first time for the adaptation of Bonaventura Genta’s 2019 best-selling book of the same name.

Mark Francis, global director of original programming at iflix, said, “It has long been our intention to figure out what innovation iflix Originals could bring to the king of Indonesian entertainment genres. Despite its proven popularity, Indonesian horror has largely been produced for movie theatres and previous attempts to do so on TV were hamstrung by low budgets or broadcast codes. With Kisah Tanah Jawa: Merapi, we believe we’ve finally disrupted that status quo by delivering a binge-worthy multi-part series in a bold new style, and that features an all-star cast. With production partners Rapi Films and direction from Faozan Rizal, you could see this as iflix ‘planting a flag.’ We are thrilled to deliver a new kind of horror experience to fans, and early 2020 is going to see us reveal another big surprise in this genre. BOO!”

Sunil Samtani, executive producer at Rapi Films, added, “It is our privilege to work with iflix on this project to deliver Kisah Tanah Jawa: Merapi to fans. We hope that audiences in Indonesia can witness a different horror experience on their mobile devices—a very local and disturbing concept that will keep them up all night.”
