The six-part Danish series Prisoner, produced by DR Drama, has been acquired to air on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer.

The show revolves around the lives of four prison officers whose personal challenges intertwine with the complexities of their workplace, which is plagued by bad press, hierarchy issues and a drug trade.

Sofie Gråbøl, David Dencik, Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt and Charlotte Fich are among the main cast members. The series is created by Kim Fupz Aakeson (The Shift, Welcome to Utmark, Cry Wolf, Young Astrid) and directed and co-created by Michael Noer (Before the Frost, Papillon, R) and Frederik Louis Hviid (Temple, Follow The Money, Shorta).

Prisoner is produced by DR Drama in collaboration with public broadcasters NRK, SVT, Yle and RÚV as part of the Nordic 12 partnership.

Sue Deeks, head of program acquisitions at BBC, said, “Prisoner is an authentic, complex and compelling portrait of the harsh realities of life in prison, where it isn’t only the inmates who are trapped…”
