The BBC has commissioned the six-part drama Grams from creator, writer and director James Price (Dog Days, Boys Night).
The series sees widowed Glaswegian Thana become the target of a violent local gang after the death of her beloved grandson. She finds salvation in the form of Connor, a friend of Michael’s with serious anger issues. The two team up to find out what really happened to Michael.
Grams is being produced by World Productions (Vigil, Save Me, Line of Duty), an ITV Studios company, in association with ITV Studios, which will be distributing the series. It is being made with the support of Screen Scotland.
The six-parter will air on BBC One, BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer.
“I am beyond elated that Grams is coming to the BBC,” Price said. “It has been an absolute dream come true bringing this story to life with the geniuses at World Productions—I cannot thank them enough. I can’t wait for audiences across the U.K. to meet Thana, Connor and our eclectic mix of characters.”
“It’s been an absolute privilege to be part of this journey from the very beginning, working with someone as talented as James Price on a project so close to his heart,” commented George Aza-Selinger, producer of Grams and head of development at World Productions Scotland. “And I am absolutely over the moon to be bringing this story to the screen with the wonderful team at the BBC.”
Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said, “Grams is a show like no other—a surprising, funny, character-driven story about an unlikely friendship between two people who are drawn together to uncover the truth, with danger at every turn. We know viewers will fully invest in them, and we are so excited to work with James and World Productions to bring this show to the BBC.”
“BBC Scotland have always been fans of James Price and loved working with him on his award-winning digital drama success Dog Days,” noted Louise Thornton, head of commissioning for BBC Scotland. “It’s brilliant that his unique voice will be showcased to the widest possible audience with Grams. It’s a truly gripping character drama filled with twists and turns, and we know audiences across the U.K. will love following the adventures of Thana and Connor.”
Kieran Hannigan, head of scripted at Screen Scotland, added, “We are thrilled to support World and the BBC with James Price’s TV debut. James is a huge talent and important voice from Scotland. Content originated in Scotland by Scottish voices is at the heart of our mission, and Screen Scotland is proud to have been part of his journey to this point and cannot wait to see the series hit the screens.”
