Production Begins on Angelina Jolie-Directed Without Blood

Production has begun on Fremantle’s Without Blood adaptation, with Angelina Jolie writing and directing and Salma Hayek Pinault (Frida, Eternals, House of Gucci) starring.

Based on Alessandro Baricco’s international best-selling novel of the same name, the film is set in the aftermath of an unidentified conflict and explores war, trauma, memory and healing. Demián Bichir (A Better Life, Hateful 8, Land) stars alongside Hayek Pinault.

Without Blood is being produced by Fremantle, Jolie Productions (Angelina Jolie), The Apartment Pictures (Lorenzo Mieli) and De Maio Entertainment (Lorenzo De Maio). Filming has begun in the Puglia (Apulia) and Basilicata regions of southern Italy, as well as in Rome.

This is Jolie’s fifth film as director and her first under the three-year international filmmaking agreement she signed with Fremantle in March.

Jolie said: “I’m honored to be here in Italy to bring this very special material to film and to have been entrusted by Alessandro Baricco with the adaptation of his book, with its unique poetry and emotion and way of looking at war and the questions it poses about what we search for after trauma or loss or injustice.”

Jennifer Mullin, global CEO of Fremantle added: “Without Blood is the first production under our partnership with Angelina, and we are excited to work with her and the incredible international team she has assembled. This project underlines Fremantle’s ongoing commitment to producing high-quality feature films and original dramas working with the very best talent from across the globe.”
