Sony Expected to Cut 10,000 Jobs

TOKYO: Sony Corporation is planning to ax around 6 percent of its global workforce, which is roughly 10,000 jobs, according to reports.

The Nikkei newspaper reports that half of the latest round of job cuts would come from consolidating the firm’s chemicals ad small and midsize LCD operations. The cuts come as the new CEO Kazuo Hirai looks to guide the company back to profit after four years of losses.

As of the end of March 2011, Sony had 168,200 employees on a consolidated basis, according to its website.

Sony declined to comment on the reports.
