The History Channel Launches VOD Services in Korea

LONDON/SEOUL, September
18: The History Channel has signed agreements with Gretech and Hanaro Telecom
for the roll out of two new video-on-demand services in Korea.

Both agreements were
reached in association with JoongAng Broadcasting Corp. (JBC), which programs
and operates The History Channel in Korea. This marks the launch of The History
Channel’s first video-on-demand offerings in Asia. Through the agreement with
Gretech, The History Channel has a branded service on the info and
entertainment offerings of GOM TV, an advertising-supported broadband video
player. The lineup includes titles such as Modern Marvels, Declassified and Beyond the DaVinci Code, among others, all available in the Korean
language.

Hanaro Telecom will debut
the service on Hana TV, the largest IPTV service in Korea with 470,000
subscribers. The History Channel VOD service is offered in the documentary
lineup on the Hana TV subscription VOD service, including the titles Shootout!,
Investigating History, Modern Marvels, Declassified
and more.

“The History Channel has
reached several milestones in Asia this year, as we launched a new linear
service across much of Southeast Asia, and now the network’s first VOD services
in Korea via GOM TV and Hana TV,” said Fabienne Fourquet, the director of international
digital media for A&E Television Networks, the parent company of The
History Channel. “We are very pleased to bring the network’s programming to an
expanded audience in Korea and look forward to the continued growth of our
brands and audience.”
