Televisa Secures Approval for Cable Platform Acquisition

MEXICO CITY, July 16: Grupo Televisa has received approval
to acquire 49 percent of Mexico’s second-largest cable platform, Cablemas, on
the condition that it makes its free TV channels available to all pay-TV
operators in the country.

A Bloomberg report, citing a statement from president of the
Federal Competition Commission, Eduardo Perez Motta, noted: “We are making sure
Televisa will offer equal access to its content and networks in a short period
of time.”

Televisa announced earlier this year that it was acquiring
the stake in Cablemas for $258 million. The platform services some 700,000
subscribers, published reports indicate. The Mexican media giant has 90 days to
comply with the agency’s ruling.
