Telemundo and Xtra Want to Launch a TV Network in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, September 22:
Telemundo, the U.S. Spanish-language broadcast network, and the Mexican company
Grupo Xtra would like to start a TV network in Mexico and have petitioned the
Mexican government to auction additional broadcast frequencies.

According to Reuters,
Telemundo and Xtra went to Coferel, Mexico’s telecom authority, as well as to
the transport and communications ministry last week. The two companies
partnered earlier this year with the aim to produce TV programs and look for
media ventures in Mexico. They reportedly plan to build a new production studio
there.

Telemundo is part of
General Electric’s NBC Universal and Xtra is controlled by the Saba family,
whose holdings include numerous businesses, ranging from tourism to textiles.
