Sony Profit Soars

TOKYO, October 25: Sony Corporation posted a second-quarter
profit of Y73.7 billion ($641 million), almost 4,300 percent up on Q2 2006’s
Y1.7 billion ($14.9 million), with revenues up 12 percent to Y2.1 trillion
($18.1 billion).

At Sony Pictures Entertainment, higher sales of theatrically
released and made-for-television movies in the television market led to a 6.4
percent revenue increase to $1.6 billion, and the segment emerged from a loss
to post a profit of $23 million. Sony cited Superbad as the film that contributed the most to the revenue
gains.

Electronics segment sales increased 20.7 percent to $14.4
billion, with an operating income of $930 million, led by BRAVIA LCD
televisions, VAIO PCs and Cyber-shot digital cameras. In the Game segment,
sales increased 42.9 percent to $2.1 billion, thanks to the PS3, but the
division’s loss widened to $841 million.
