Slumdog Tops BAFTAs

LONDON: Slumdog Millionaire was a big winner at last night’s Orange British Academy Film Awards, scoring a best film nod as well as best director for Danny Boyle, best adapted screenplay for Simon Beaufoy and best music for A.R. Rahman, among others.

The film, which recently took home the Golden Globe for best picture, also scored awards for cinematography, editing and sound. Other winners included the documentary Man on Wire as best British film, and WALL-E for best animated feature. 

In the performance categories, Mickey Rourke took leading actor for his work on The Wrestler, while Kate Winslet won for The Reader. In the supporting categories, Heath Ledger won for The Dark Knight, while Penelope Cruz was awarded for Vicky Christina Barcelona.

The BAFTA for original screenplay went to Martin McDonagh for In Bruges. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, meanwhile, scored statuettes for production design, visual effects and makeup and hair. The BAFTAs also presented an Academy Fellowship to Terry Gilliam.
