Rollout of Connected-TV Devices Set to Increase

SCOTTSDALE: By 2013, 46 percent of the flat-panel TVs being shipped by manufacturers will be enabled with internal broadband connectivity, up from 19 percent this year.

According to ABI Research, connectivity is expected to become a mainstream feature within the next few years. Industry analyst Michael Inouye noted: “New features will include media guides/browsing, Web browsing, and more tightly integrated social and information-based datasets.”

The rise of connected-TV devices will be a boon for advertisers, ABI continues, and can create new opportunities for set manufacturers. “TV makers no longer want to build ‘dumb screens,’" Inouye said. "Rather than simply selling boxes, TV makers themselves could try to secure part of the revenue generated by ads their devices present.”
