LOS ANGELES: The soon-to-launch 3D joint-venture channel from Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX has commissioned a range of original and exclusive series and firmed up several partner program acquisitions.

Original series include Abandoned Planet, a one-hour series that sheds light on why people have abandoned the places they once called home; Africa in 3D, which spotlights the richness and diversity of the world’s second largest continent; China, to be produced by NHNZ; and Jewels of the World, also produced by NHNZ. Exclusive U.S. premieres include Attack of the Giant Jellyfish and The Haunted from Discovery; Into the Deep 3D and Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D from IMAX; and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House from Sony.

These titles represent the first list of native 3D programs that will be featured on the 3D network, which is slated to launch in 2011.

“Today’s announcement represents the first step in our commitment to provide viewers with immersive, entertaining programming as we build the most extensive library of original and exclusive 3D content available anywhere,” said Tom Cosgrove, the president and CEO of the joint venture. “As we work toward launch, we are focused on bringing together a diverse slate of high-quality 3D offerings from both our strategic partners, as well as premier production companies from around the globe.”
