BURBANK: Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, are developing a sequel to the series to air on Nickelodeon in 2011.

The tentatively titled The Legend of Korra is set 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The new Avatar is a teenage girl named Korra, who heads to the crime-ridden Republic City to begin her airbending training under Tenzin, son of Avatar Aang.

News of the sequel comes following the theatrical release of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies live-action The Last Airbender, which, despite poor reviews, has garnered more than $115 million at the box office.

"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," said Brown Johnson, president of animation at the Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group.  "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

Launched in February 2005, Avatar aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon.
