TOKYO: The historical drama Princess Atsu has been sold by NHK Enterprises to Romania’s Antena TV Group for its Euforia Lifestyle TV channel.

The 50-episode period drama tells the story of a woman who rose to become the wife of a shogun and later saved the capital from a devastating civil war. Euforia Lifestyle TV will give the show its European debut this summer. Princess Atsu has also been sold into territories such as Brunei, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan.

Shigeru Aoki, NEP’s corporate officer, said: “I’m delighted that Princess Atsu is going to be aired in Romania. Although the story is set in 19th-century Japan, it’s a Cinderella story; the tale of a girl whose dignity, political savvy and enthusiasm for life carry her through an age of upheaval. I’m sure it will resonate with European viewers just as it has with viewers in Asia.”

Florin Nicoara, the channel manager for Euforia, said: “Euforia TV is a lifestyle channel targeting women. Emotions, feelings and positive attitudes toward life that can be found in women are some of our core brand values. We are certain that the story and main characters of Princess Atsu will appeal to our viewers.”
