NEW YORK: Univision Communications has launched La Fabrica UCI, a new in-house digital content production unit meant to create, script and produce original video for new digital brands and the company’s digital platforms in Spanish and English.

La Fabrica UCI will be led by Boris Gartner, the VP and general manager, who will work under Isaac Lee, the president of Univision News and Fusion, and Mehul Nagrani, the senior VP and general manager of Digital. The division will generate content through partnerships, acquisitions and in-house development. It will create, script and produce original video for a number of new digital brands, as well as for Univision.com and UVideos. Productions houses will be located in both New York and Miami.

The first long-form production for La Fabrica UCI is Medicina Desconocida (Strange Medicine), which is available exclusively on UVideos.com. The 12-episode show watches as Univision chief medical correspondent Dr. Juan Rivera looks for unique cures and medicines around the globe. The first digital partnership is with Variety and will kick off on February 27. The collaboration sees the creation of “Variety Latino—powered by Univision,” which offers worldwide entertainment coverage for Spanish speakers throughout the U.S.

“In the past three years, Univision has transformed from a niche network to a leading multiplatform media company with a strong focus on digital,” said Lee. “La Fabrica UCI speaks to our ongoing commitment to delivering the best and most innovative content in Spanish and English across platforms.”

“La Fabrica UCI will develop digital brands with alternative content offerings in both English and Spanish that will allow us to expand our audience and test new concepts developed with a digital-native audience in mind,” noted Gartner.

Nagrani added: “La Fabrica UCI, which is a key part of our digital growth strategy, enables us to deliver Hispanic digital natives with high quality content and offer advertisers innovative ways to reach this coveted audience.”
