NEW YORK: Icon Films has been commissioned to produce a third season of River Monsters for Animal Planet, after the second run became the network’s most-watched series in its history.

Season two of River Monsters averaged more than 1.5 million viewers with those over the age of 2. During its six weeks on the air, River Monsters boosted Animal Planet to rank among the top five ad-supported cable networks in the Sunday 10 p.m. hour with the 25-to-54 set and males 25 to 54 (excluding sports).

A third season is already in production, slated to launch in spring 2011. The new installment will feature killer fish in freshwater locations such as New Zealand, Brazil, Japan, Australia and more.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the performance of River Monsters and look forward to seeing what Jeremy has planned for another mystery-laden season,” said Marjorie Kaplan, the president and general manager of Animal Planet Media.
