BURBANK, August 20: The Friday prime-time premiere of High
School Musical 2, executive produced by Bill
Borden and Barry Rosenbush, attracted 17.2 million viewers, ranking as the
most-watched basic cable telecast in history.
High School Musical 2,
which premiered on Friday, August 17, at 8 p.m., now stands as basic cable’s number-one rated movie,
surpassing the previous record holder—TNT’s Crossfire Trail—by almost two million viewers (38 percent).
The sequel also notched up record ratings among key demographics, ranking as
the most-watched TV telecast in history among kids aged 6 to 11, and as TV’s
most-watched entertainment telecast among tweens aged 9 to 14, behind only the
Super Bowl telecast in 2004. High School Musical 2 was also TV’s most-watched Friday telecast in total
viewers in more than five years.
The preview of the upcoming
original series Phineas & Ferb
immediately followed the premiere of High School Musical 2, attracting Disney
Channel’s second-largest audience of all time in total viewers (10.8 million)
and among kids aged 6 to 11 (4.2 million). The preview also tied Hannah
Montana as the second-most-watched program
among tweens 9 to 14, drawing 4.2 million viewers in that age demographic.
Friday’s new Hannah Montana episode, which followed the sneak peek of Phineas &
Ferb, now stands as basic cable’s
number-one series telecast of all time in total viewers with 10.7 million,
among kids aged 6 to 11 with 4.2 million, and tweens 9 to 14 with 4.1 million.
