Half of All Tablet Owners View Movies & TV Shows

SCOTTSDALE: New research from In-Stat shows that 50 percent of tablet owners are not only watching feature-length movies on their device, but also TV shows.

The data finds that tablets and smartphones are becoming vital new screens for video consumption, and are also functioning as personal interaction devices for video-centric social networking and applications.

Frequent mobile video users are expected to more than triple within the next five years. Nearly half of those 18 to 24 who own tablets/smartphones frequently social network about TV programs currently being viewed. Also, 86 percent of users will view video on their mobile dives. Nearly 60 percent will also be viewing OTT video at home.

“Tablets, in particular, have become a primary video device, both inside and outside the home,” said Keith Nissen, research director. “By 2015, our research projects that 65 percent of the U.S. population will own a smartphone and/or tablet. As these devices become a center-point for video engagement and consumption, content providers, device manufacturers, and operators need to support a multiscreen usage model that reflects social interaction, screen interaction, personalization and mobility.”
