European Commission Explores PSB Funding

BRUSSELS: The European Commission has launched a public consultation on new rules governing state funding of public-service broadcasters.

After it receives feedback, the Commission is planning to adopt a new Broadcasting Communication directive later this year. The proposed new rules are intended to allow pubcasters to take full advantage of new technology, while at the same time maintaining a fair level of competition in the market. The deadline for comments on the new draft is May 8.

Public broadcasters receive more than 22 billion euros annually from license fees or direct government aid.
